Iron City’s Magic Maker

Getting to Know Michelle Langdon, Iron City’s Private Events Manager

Are you from Birmingham?

“I’m not from Birmingham. I’m actually not even a southern bell. Could you guess that? I’m originally from Washington state, but went to college at Ole Miss (Hotty Toddy!).  I moved to Birmingham after graduating and have considered this home for six years now.”

How long have you been with Iron City?

“I’ve been with Iron City since we opened, which is just over 4 years now. Working for a company from the ground up has been the most rewarding career experience.”

What do you think is your best quality and how does it help you in your profession?

“My best quality is that I try to just be myself.  I’m an open book, opinionated and honest, and treat you as I would a good friend. During the planning process we work together for anytime from 6 months to 18 months. I want it to be fun for you and that you feel as if we’ve established a trusting relationship prior to your big day. My personal approach helps my clients feel comfortable being themselves. I want you to know you have a helping hand during the wedding planning process.”

What is your favorite part about meeting a new bride to be?

“My favorite part about meeting a new bride (or potential bride) is learning more about their personality. I love getting the scoop on the engagement, discovering the quirks about each couple, and bonding over how cute our dogs are. I also enjoy speaking to a couple while they’re still in the “exciting stage” of the wedding planning process. I like to hear about what’s important to them for their big day, and I keep this with me throughout the process.”

What is your interaction with the bride and the planning process?

“I’m actively involved every step of the way. I do most of the venue tours, initial communication, and will be your main point of contact during the planning process. Once you book your date, you have a lot of homework to do picking out all of your vendors and wedding details. Communication will increase once we are about three months out. I will help you create a layout for your event, host a tasting to determine your menu and will ask you a million questions so I can do my best to organize your day. If you don’t have a wedding planner, we will work with you to create a ceremony and reception timeline. We will be here on your wedding day to help execute. I pack to-go food in your getaway car, assist your vendors, help pass out your send off goodies and help your parents gather everything at the end of the night. Our entire team is here to help you, at any point, with anything you need.”

What is your favorite part of the evening during weddings at Iron City?

“This is going to be super random, but my favorite (well, one of my favorite) parts of the evening is when “Shout” comes on! It’s played at almost every wedding reception here and always gets everyone on the dance floor. For most of our brides, having a super fun reception is high on their priority list. Watching all of the guests, young and old, ‘kick their heals up and Shout’ is the best moment for me.”

If you weren’t an event manager, what would your dream job be?

“My dream job would be to own my own company that flips homes. There are a lot of similarities in objectives. I’d coordinate a lot of details within a budget to create a beautiful vision. Just call me Joanna.”

If there was one piece of advice you could give to a new bride-to-be, what would it be?

I would advise newly engaged brides, and brides-to-be to slow down. Enjoy the engagement! If you have to, book the venue and ceremony location as well as any other vendors that are really important to you. Then take some time to relax and enjoy the ride. Wedding planning is stressful, time consuming and can quickly become overwhelming. Take it as slow as you need to and don’t lost sight of the things that are most important to you.”

How do you envision your perfect wedding day?

“My perfect wedding day involves the beach, a glass of Prosecco and my closest family and friends. I want it to be relaxed (well, I want to be relaxed). I want to spend the day with the people I love the most. I imagine it to be one of those days that seems to last forever and I’m able to soak up every second of laughter, fun and love.”
